Fire Questions

Q: What if I have a fire in the middle of the night, or it’s a weekend?
A: Always call 911 first in an emergency. Once the fire department is on site and you and your family are out of danger, call us at 952-882-8904. Fires happen at all hours, which is why we’re near our phones 24/7, 365 days a year. We’ll be there within an hour of your call (or sooner) if you live in the Twin Cities metro area.

Q: I can’t stay in my home, but I’m worried to leave everything because people could easily get in. What should I do?
A: When you call Highmark, we’ll make sure your home is secured before leaving the premises. We’ll board up damaged windows, doors, or other points of entry. At your discretion, we can move any valuables to a different location.

Q: There’s more damage from water than fire… can you fix that too?
A: Putting out fires usually means water damage in addition to soot, smoke, and charring. Highmark is certified in water clean-up and dry-out processes as well as repairing and rebuilding damaged structures. In fact, you can rely on us to fix and restore your home no matter what kind of damage it has sustained.

Q: Can any of our things that got damaged by smoke or water from putting out the fire be salvaged?
A: We carefully inventory all affected belongings and move what can be salvaged to a separate location for cleaning, drying, and restoration. How much can be saved depends on the extent of damage, but typically, more is salvageable than you might realize.

Q: My fire was small and I put it out myself, but it still did damage; can you help?
A: Absolutely. Even small fires such as a stovetop mishap can result in damage. If a fire’s cause is not obvious, we can usually help you determine the cause and take steps to fix any underlying issues. We can also repair damaged walls, ceilings or other structures.

Q: We can’t stay in our home until it’s fixed, but I’m not sure where we should go. What are our options? And what about our pets?
A: Highmark’s concierge service can help with lining up accommodations in the short term, such as hotel rooms, as well as living quarters when extensive repairs or rebuilding can require weeks or months away from your home. We’ll do whatever it takes to help find the right accommodations for you—and your pets—until you can return home again. Assistance and information is just a phone call away at 952-882-8904.

Q: We had a fire and everything is burned or damaged—important papers, identification, even our clothing. What do we do?
A: That’s what Highmark’s concierge service is here for. We can provide credit cards for purchasing basic necessities like food and clothing, and help you begin to recover important documents and identification. We can also help provide accommodations, transportation, pet care and more. Assistance and information is just a phone call away at 952-882-8904.

Water Questions

Q: There’s standing water in my basement…what should I do?
A: If you suspect a plumbing problem has caused the water, such as a leaking pipe, call a plumbing professional first. (Avoid walking through standing water, as there is a risk of electrical shock.) Call Highmark next. We can quickly assess the extent of damages and begin working to mitigate the effects of the water, start dry-out processes and prevent further damage, including mold growth.

Q: We had a water leak and fixed the problem, but there are water stains on the ceiling...should I be worried about this?
A: Water stains are an indication that water was present where it shouldn’t have been, and a previous leak may have weakened structural elements or provided enough moisture for mold to grow. Call Highmark for a professional inspection.

Q: How do you dry out my home? How do I know if things are really dry?
A: Our Certified Applied Structural Drying technicians use a variety of techniques and equipment to dry out homes with water damage. Afterward, we do humidity testing and moisture readings to ensure that drying is complete and mold testing to ensure that no mold is present.

Q: Can any of our things that got wet be salvaged?
A: There are a variety of techniques for drying furnishings, household items and valuables, including documents, and we are often successful in salvaging things that our clients didn’t think could be saved. But, while we do our best, every situation is different. We will work closely with you to inventory, pack and remove affected belongings to a separate location for the cleaning and restoration process.

Q: We can’t stay in our home until it’s fixed, but I’m not sure where we should go. What are our options?
A: Highmark’s concierge service can help with lining up accommodations in the short term, such as hotel rooms, as well as living quarters when extensive repairs or rebuilding can require weeks or months away from home. We’ll do whatever it takes to help find the right accommodations for you—and your pets—until you can return home again. Assistance and information is just a phone call away at 952-882-8904.

Mold Questions

Q: How do you deal with mold?
A: Highmark technicians use a variety of techniques to remediate mold in your home. Steps include: moisture assessment; microbial sampling; identification of the source and causes of mold growth; safe removal of damaged materials; containment; and clean-up.

Q: Are all molds dangerous?
A: In short, no. There are literally hundreds of different household molds; most can cause allergy symptoms. A few are toxic and Highmark is careful to fully remove them and remediate affected areas.

Q: Will it be safe to live in our home again if mold has been found?
A: In nearly all cases, yes, when the mold and its underlying cause are promptly and properly dealt with.

Q: Can mold grow in areas where it has been wet even if it’s dry now?
A: Mold spores are ever-present and are activated by the right growing conditions, one of which is humidity or moisture. To prevent future mold growth, be sure to keep the area dry and well-ventilated.

Q: How can I be sure that mold didn’t grow before we got things dried out?
A: Highmark’s mold testing processes will detect the presence of mold; if any suggestion of mold is found, we’ll take the proper steps to thoroughly remediate and eradicate it.

Q: We can’t stay in our home until it’s fixed, but I’m not sure where we should go. What are our options?
